Yes it should just check the motor mounts and bellhousing cause you dont mention what tranny you have this info will tell you for sure
,and just reuse all the 2001 componets back on the replacement block.

yes it will work......the short blocks are the same. swap all the accessories over from your 01 engine. all 4.0 motor mounts are the same on the block and the bellhousings are all the same bolt pattern if they come out of a 4.0 jeep. no 4.0 has a different bellhousing bolt pattern.

only differences are on the heads.

yes this is my first post.......but i have owned at least 25 4.0L jeeps.

make sure first, i think it will.... the blocks are different from model to model.. how the oil filter is mounted, the motor mount bracket mounts on the blocks are different. how the accessory's mount are different as well. the water pumps are different bolt patterns and how the fan mounts, depending on where the p/s pump mounts and the alternator brackets mount. they could be the same but look closely first. i tried to put a 01 4.0L from a TJ into my 00 Cherokee and it wast the same. couldn't mount the correct water pump, mount brackets, the front cover was different and not machined. it was 1 year difference and the blocks where VERY different but had the same head.

but i think i remember seeing that a GC motor should work in my 00... but was sick of the headache and just rebuilt mine.

^ this is correct. but can be worked around. the cam/crank "sync" sensor goes in the same place as the distributor. the head wont have a place for the coil to mount. but brackets can/have been made to have this work.

oil filters are bolted on with adapters that very from year to year and model.

i could be wrong on the tj block, as i havent delt with them.

and it sounds like everything you mentioned that was different was all the bolt on accessories. if you would have swapped the timing cover, i bet it would have worked for you. i dont know about the motor mounts.

last i checked the distributer goes in the block so if he uses the 95 block there will be a hole where the distributer goes.

you are correct........kinda. that is where the coil pickup OR the distributor go.

put the coil pick up where the distributor goes and bam....done.

i have done this swap evilxj85, just the opposite way(01 into a 91).....run out and check an 01'. there is the same hole on the block and it has a coil pick up shoved in it instead of a distributor. then on the head in 01 they put an extra casting on the head for the coil bolt holes to be drilled and tapped.
only other diference i found on the two was on the head. 91 has two temp sensors, 1 for ecm, and 1 for temp guage. 01 uses only 1. i had to make an adapter to run my temp guage sensor. he wont have to do that.

thats the last i will say about it.....Im not very e-tough!!

If you swap a 4.0 from any year XJ, the engine brackets will be an issue.

4.0L engines originally installed on the following year/vehicles have identical block bolt patterns. However, it's important to note because doghouse widths differ, engine bracket arms differ from model to model.

XJ/MJ - All years
YJ/TJ - 1987-1999
ZJ - 1993-1998

A new 4.0L engine block (clean-sheet design) was used on the following year/vehicles. There are several differences between the two blocks.

TJ - 2000-2006
WJ - 1999-2004

We can accommodate virtually all the swaps except the swap you are attempting. In fact, we offer brackets for swapping a engine from a WJ into an XJ, but not going the other way.

The Production Engine Remanufacturers Association (PERA) published an excellent article about this. I'll try to find a link.

Found the link: http://www.pera.org/articles/eb40319.htm
