Default Headlight switch VS Relay

Pulled the head lights then smelled a wire burning. Im looking for those that had the same problem and switched over to the relay kit.

TIA

I never burned any wires but my normal headlights sucked in any sort of bad weather. I bought the upgrade kit from HEADLIGHT SERVICES that included the harness assembly and relays...no issues and a fairly easy install. I think the entire kit was 110 bucks give or take. I dont think I could have made it myself for too much less and it saved several hours of fabrication..well worth the price. If you want the kit, you will still have to fix the burnt wire or switch first. It is a 2001 if that matters..now I run the silverstars...nice bright pattern but the service life sucks...less than a year

I agree with @bluejeep2001 to install a quality harness kit that uses adequate wire gauges. I bought a $20 kit and regretted it as it had like 20 AWG wire. The actual wires looked thick but when I cut one to inspect it, I swear it was 20 AWG or at least close to that. Plus it was haphazardly constructed. You could build your own using 12 AWG silicone wire with Hella relays for probably around $40. I ended up re-wiring my cheapo harness so I could sleep better at night.

Building your own upgrade harness with relays is not hard. If that's not something you'd enjoy doing KFab Suspension makes them ready to go for a reasonable price.

Do it before your switch burns up.

Yup, this.

Unless you have an extra set of elbows in your arms and tiny little munchkin hands, installing a double relay headlight harness is physically easier and takes less time than replacing the headlight switch.

When you "smelled a wire burning" there's a good chance that what you were smelling was the switch or the connector burning.
you need to figure out what burnt yourself, can't do that remotely
