Default Grinding on take off?

'95 XJ 2WD 4.0L/AW4

Seems like everytime I fix something 3 more things break, some reason I still like my Jeep though.

Everytime I came to a stop in town today as soon as I would hit the gas it was make a short grind sound then just go away. It wouldn't do it when already rolling(even very slowly) and punching the gas. Well, I pull away from a parts store after replacing a vac line and punch the gas to cut across traffic and it was a LOUD grind. It almost sounds like my torque converter is going out.

Well, I take some backroads home and listen to it a couple of times by coming to a stop and punching it. Thought it may be the suspension creaking so i tried hitting the brakes and hitting the throttle to make it bounce. Couldn't reproduce it except by coming to a complete stop. I drive it up to this abandoned city park that has a long drag strip type parking area.

Don't preach I know this is dangerous, but I open my door and lean out and look directly under the jeep and slam on the gas. It doesn't happen, my passenger who is my backup restraint said he didn't hear it in the cab either. So I try a few more times and nothing, it just stopped. I held the brakes and tapped the throttle a few times, other than the tires breaking loose a couple of times, no grinding.

I go ahead and head home after about 10 mins of trying to reproduce it and pull up to a 4-way, I take off and it makes the short grind sound again. What could be causing this? My current suspects are the torque converter, but I can't tell exactly where it's coming from. Also, I am thinking the brakes may not be releasing correctly. I can't get it to happen again when I am outside the vehicle, or leaning out. Seems as soon as I shut the door it acts up again, it's definitely not the door though haha. There is no vibration in the shifter when it happens.

I had something similar but the grind didn't stop until I let go of the gas. Does the sound hve a vibe too? Anyways, my problem was a completely shot trans mount. Everytime i gassed it from a stop, the mount was moving. Easy thing to check, right above cross member. Good luck. Just Empty Every Pocket : )

It definitely needs a trans mount. It's being replaced after taxes come back. I just recently bought the jeep and have never replaced the differential fluid, but I did check it and topped it off. Wasn't low at all. The sound is a little random. It sounds a bit different each time, but similar enough to know it's from the same thing.

How hard is it to replace the tranny mounts on these? Just lift/support/swap?

I had a commanche do that. I ended up being the front driveshaft rubbing on the exhaust pipe that somehow got bent out of place. Under hard acceleration the front end would lift up a little bit and put the drive shaft in line with the exhaust

Pretty much like you said. Lift support swap. Hopefully thats it. No need for tax returns, it's a really cheap part.

An old man decided it would be a good idea to burn our house down out of spite of someone that doesn't even live there. Unfortunately my floor jack and jack stands were all in that house. So, I have quite a list =(

That's unfortunate man. Hope everything works out for you.

As for the jeep. This may be too obvious but I'll throw it out there. Earlier this year I had the same exact problem but my sound was coming from the front of the jeep. My fan was hitting my fan shroud under hard acceleration. It made a clicking/grinding noise. Turns out my drivers side motor mount was shot as the engine would go up under acceleration and cause the fan to hit. For giggles you can check the drivers motor mount and your fan shroud?

Let us know if you get it figured out.

Thanks it sucks. We owned the house, he set it on fire then stood out front with a .22 revolver threatening to shoot the firemen if they tried to put it out. I thought arson was a felony, but I guess I am wrong and they took pitty on him and not the $60,000 home we owned, my fiance's '96 S10 pickup, and all of our belongings that he burned. He got off with a slap on the wrist. They sent him home, never spent a day in jail. Only got a couple years probation. While we have to start over on everything and have to pay rent on a crappy duplex in a not so great neighborhood and are down to 1 vehicle again. It's great that the victims lose everything, have to pay even more just to survive while that piece is sitting in his nice brick home watching TV and retired and sold his business for a few million dollars. However, we are screwed over and broke...must be nice. He pays us "restitution" or whatever it's called. It's checks we get in the mail. $14 a month.<- not a typo.

Anyway, rant over, the fan shroud is a good idea. Didn't even think of it and it's kinda what it sounds like. I just wish it would do it while I am in a position to hear where it's coming from.

Another problem, I hate starting new threads for my paranoia so I will keep this here. My jeep feels like it's floating? I don't know if it's because I have been driving a car so long vs something more than an inch off the ground or if it should feel that way. When I go down a bumpy road even at like 15-20 mph it feels like the jeep is free floating over the wheels. I yanked on everything and the entire front suspension looks pretty new. All the joints are solid and greased. I can't move anything, ball joints all seem sturdy. Is this a normal feeling? It doesn't give me any death wobble, or even vibrate going highway speeds(70mph+). It doesn't have any lift added all stock.

Get the trans mount in there and while you're at it, check the engine mounts. Most likely your problem.
