Most 1st gen XJ guys can relate here when I say that the fiberglass hatch squeak is among one of the most annoying sounds ever. My question is, who knows of a fix for this? I want to get rid of it since I DD my jeep and it's driving me crazy

I really don't remember if my older XJ's had the adjustable bump stops on them. If so did you by any chance try that. Like I said I don't recall if they are adjustable or not. Hopefully for your sake they do...
Wish I could be a little more help then that.

Yeah my Jeep has those. Is that really the fix for the problem? I may be over thinking things then!

I know when I had my 95 it had a real bad rattle and I made the adjustments and it worked for me. The only problem is if you have to make a big adjustment it can cause air leaks too.

I had this. Most of the time I had the radio on and couldn't hear it but it was still annoying. Squeaking sound especially over small bumps. At first I thought it was the rear U joint but then I just pushed the rear bumper down with the car off and heard it coming from the rear hatch latch area. Opened the hatch and pushed on the bumper and no squeak. Thus it was coming from the latch/strike plate and not the U joint.

Slathered the striker with anti seize grease and **** WD40 into the latch and voila fixed. No more annoying squeak. Try it.

Great idea! I'll give it a try today

It's pretty damned simple, actually.

Lube up the latch.

Yep, that's all. Mine squeaked a LOT, drove me insane. I tried everything from adjusting the bump stops to keep the door from moving at all when closed, to propping something against the door from the inside.

Turns out all I had to do with dab some grease on the latch, and the squeaking went away.

EDIT: didn't see post above mine.. so in other words, I agree
