yes you need 75W-90 (GL-5) gear lube. Synthetic or not is your choice, but I would use synth if you find it.

okay, but isint it thinner which could cause it to leak ? It says to use mopar rtv sealent. And how much of it do i need, i got the specs right here but..

Differential Oil Capacity

181 FBI 1.48L (3.13 pints)
194 RBI 1.66L (3.50 pints)
With TRAC-LOK include 3.5 oz. friction modifier
8 1/4 2.08L (4.4 pints)
With TRAC-LOK include 4 oz. friction modifier

I read that if i do go synthetic i should buy a gasket as synthetic eats through rtv is that correct?

Batt thinner when cold no appreciable difference. As far as rtv just use blue permatex. A tube will do

Permatex rtv is your friend... just run 1/8 or so wide bead all the way around and surround the holes.

alrighty well i figured out that all xj have dana 30 up front and the rear my has a dana 35 from what it looks. I bought some valvoline 75w90 synthetic gear fluid and a pump so im good to go for today, also gaskets. The bolts have been sprayed down with wd40 also should i use brake cleaner to clean out the inside of the diffs ?

well looks like i got another problem the spedometer did not work and the airbag light was on. But then i drove it again and it worked hmm any ideas? I read that its quiet common in these jeeps.

thanks, yup cleaned it with brake cleaner and after wards i wiped it down to make sure nothing was left on the bottom. Also my diff cover was rusted so i sanded it down with a wire brush and painted it with plasti dip it looks wonderful now and i applied the silicon gas maker sealent with the gasket. Now it has to dry 12-24hr and then ima fill it up. But since all i did today was the front so while its drying ima do the rear tomorrow.

Hopefully it does not leak

thanks guys for all the help and after im done with the diffs ima do the transfer case.

also about that gauge cluster thing where is that located ? and where do i check for grounds ? would it be the battery terminals ?

You have to pull the guage cluster out. The ground is behind it.

well i think everything went good i filled the diffs up with fluid doesnt leak at all so it should be fine.

Haha i went for a drive and the gauges werent working and the airbag was on i hit it under the steering column a little to the right and it fixed it temporarily. lol next up is the transfer case.

I also have a question i went through some mud holes slowly and i heard like a clunking or thump not sure on which side. Its something from the suspension i believe any ideas ?

Guys I'm sort of a newb when it comes to the XJ.
Just got the Jeep a few months ago and it now has 113k miles on it. I have never had to change out differential fluid.

I need to change out the differential fluid in the front and back.
I have the chrysler 8.25 in the rear and the dana 30 in the front (I think all XJ's have this axle in the front).

On the RTV, some people recommend blue, red, black, gray. Has anyone has any issues using one versus the other. I know that black is made specifially for differential use.

How many bottles do i need for the front, how many for the back? Will one tube of RTV get both axles? I guess that I am going to go with sythetic since most seem to recommend that If I can find it.
