Default gearing a lunchbox

I have heard that if you install a lunchbox locker you wont have room for 4.56 gears. I am wanting to lock my rear 29 spline 8.25(99 xj sport) but I do not want to limit what gears i can use later. Is anybody running this set-up? do you have to notch the ring gear? if so how? any problem with 4.10's? do some lunchboxes leave you with more room? i know i have a lot of questions but any and all help appreciated!!

Don't you have to change the carrier to go above 3.73's anyway? If so, your locker with the stock gears probably won't fit .

Right. And I think that in order to go to a 4+ ratio you will have to change out the entire center carrier. The new gears won't fit on the 3.55 unit.

Some misinformation here, lemme try to clear this up.

#1)
There's no carrier break for a Chrysler 8.25". Same carrier is used from 3.55 through 4.88

#2)
A Lunchbox locker can be installed without removing the carrier,

#3)
The ring gear will need minor grinding in order to remove the cross shaft for 4.10, 4.56, and 4.88 gears.

A Dremel with a few 60 grit sanding drums works perfectly.

Powertrax, Lock-Right, Aussie...No difference in the need to grind the ring gear, it has to be done with all of them.

Don't confuse shaving a ring gear with grinding a few teeth.

Huge difference.

Google Images has a lot of pics to illustrate grinding the ring gear.
