I have an airtex fuel pump in my 89 cherokee and it's insanely loud, and also it's made for a 20 gallon tank, which I don't have. I've been to every parts store looking for one that will fit and I can't find one that will actually fit in her besides the airtex one. any suggestions on what to do? I bought one today that is "supposed" to be the oe pump but when I brought that home it wouldn't fit in my old assembley. I'm at a loss on what to do, I didn't think finding a fuel pump would be this hard. I know threads like this are on here constantly but I would love anyone's advice on this situation.

Yeah I think their the same, it's probably the airtex pump. Im just hesitant about having that in there because all these forums say their bad and don't work, and I am having a problem every once in a while where the jeep either wont keep an idle or when I'm accelerating sometimes it will feel like it stops getting gas, and then gets gas again or something. I figured maybe that had something to do with it being a 20 gallon pump and my jeep only having a 13 gallon tank. That and sometimes it gets so loud that I can't even hear my stereo. I'm not 100% sure that's a fuel issue but I just assumed it had something to do with that pump. Im very confused on the entire situation haha.

Sounds just like mine. Fires right up to 3000rpm, then fizzles out and dies. Replaced the ballist and filter, still nothing. Gonna let the jeep sit the rest of the mnth till the first, then replace the pump.

I have had nothing but problems with Airtex fuel pumps. Because of that and because countless others have had the same results with their stuff, I won't install them, nor will I recommend them to anyone.

Has anyone found any other pumps that work? I just tried a delphi brand pump from oriley's but that wouldn't fit in the original assembly. The jeep's been doing a lot better now since I've replaced the tps, Im just still a little weary about that pump considering it's for a 20 gallon tank, would that cause any problems or anything?
thanks for all the help!

if you haven't bought one yet, i recommend www.rockauto.com i bought my fuel pump from there a few months back. was cheaper than an autozone or other parts stores. no problems with it yet. ive bought a few other things from them, so far all good experiences. mine was a pain
to put back in, there's a little hole you have to get the pump into for it to fit correctly.

Have you put a code reader on? Even if theres no CEL, there might be something stored in there that will give you a direction. You said it runs better since the TPS was replaced, what about the rest of the ignition stuff- plugs, wires, cap, rotor, good, clean battery leads and wires. And last but not least, o2 sensors... What condition are they in?

It was a while ago (06), but I just installed whatever Napa handed me in my 90. It's been fine. I'm sure it would work in a 13 or a 20 or a milk jug! My O'Rileys loans things like fuel pressure testers free with a deposit equal to it's new cost, and you don't need to return it!
