Default Frame Question

Hi,

Fairly new to this jeep site...Hopefully this thread is posted where it should be!!

Anyways, I have a 1998 2 Door Cherokee. I would like to know who has had to repair their frame, just in back of the leaf spring. My buddy who works at a jeep dealership (Mechanic) says I have 2 Broken springs in the rear. He says I will be opening up a whole new can of worms If I repair the springs, because the frame is rusted in that area. He says it will nickle and dime me to death, and suggest I just drive it till it won't go anymore lol. Have Air Shocks in Rear, 360 thousand on motor, recently replaced entire floor and repaired holes in quarter panels.....New paint,tru-trac etc. He suggest I buy new...IS IT A BIG JOB TO HAVE THIS WORK DONE and APPROX HOW MUCH $. Frame is good elsewhere....Any Help would be appreciated...What do you think...appologize for long thread.

Thanks
Steve

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. Plate the frame back there and throw some new springs under her.

X2 get some stifiners or plate it. Or spend some $ and do the coil conversion on the rear and it doesn't mater how rusted the frame is at the shackles

no way, if he doesnt know how to patch a little rust spot and he thinks he has air shocks on a leaf spring set up im pretty sure he doesnt need to link it.
4 link is over rated anyways lol

just rebuild the motor, patch the rust, get new springs, wheel it/thread

you do know you can run air shocks on a leaf sprung rear right?
there was a set under the rear of my s10 roller when I bought it.

ofcourse I got rid of them, but the spring dosent indicate the rear shock.

^ X2, i am pretty sure you can buy a differant type of shock and put it on there...

Anyway, as long as you can weld, or have a friend who can weld, just plate it, that way you don't have to worry, and it doesn't affect the vehicle like if you try to cut out the bad part and put in a new piece. I knew someone who did that... and it didn;t have a happy ending...

Slap some new plates or some relocation brackets and drive it till the motor goes. In the mean time build up a stroker to put in when the motor does give out.

maybe we are thinking of different types of shocks? because the type i am thinking of are made to be used with link set ups and support weight of the vehicle just like a leaf spring so using a spring and the type of air shock im thinking of is useless.

anyways back to the thread lol

im sure you both are talking about a different type of air shock.

sandaddik is talking about the ones like Fox offroad shocks, which are much different than the "air ride" style shocks you are talking about.

the fox style shocks take the place of both a spring and shock.

It can be fixed however when you beef up the frame, where the repair meets the old unibody frame, it has a tendency to crack at that point. Is the rusted area in front or behind the shackle mount? I'm not too sure if its as big a deal if its behind.
