1998 XJ Front Axle question
Hi,
I'm working on my new to me 98 XJ.
While I was putting new front wheel hub assembly's on I noticed that there is a black plastic dust cover of sorts on the axle that is broken. Does anyone know what that is called? It slides onto the axle and seems to protect the axle housing from getting dirt in it.
Thanks in advance for the help.

Okay, waitaminit, I didn't picture it right from your description. Let me try again...
I think you meant the black dust cover is broken and not the axle. I looked in my FSM but didn't find it as an individual part of the axle assembly - nor was there any mention of it in the instructions for axle removal/installation.

Guess I should have done a little more searching before posting the question!!!
Here's a link from this site about what I am trying to figure out:

Wonder if the dealer has the stock ones vs. buying the aftermarket ones?
Thanks Cherryokee for the replies!

You can push it (mudslinger?) in or GENTLY tap it with a hammer til the gap is smaller but mud will still get in the axle tube (there is a seal by the front differential). These are the upgrade.
