Fog Light Issue
Hi all. I have a 97 cherokee with factory fog lights. Recently, the fog lights (and the side orange lights) are on every time I use my headlights even with the fog switch in the off position. The problem is they seem to be on with about 50% power. When I turn the fog light switch to the on position, they come on 100%. The fog lights do not turn off with my high beams now (a violation in PA), they just go down to 50%. If I do not turn off the fog light switch, the fog lights will stay on and drain the battery. The old fog switch melted inside, so I replaced the fog light switch with a brand new one, so that is not the problem. My relay box does not have a relay in the DRL slot, but when I put one in, it seemed that there were no connector pins inside to hold the relay. Please help.

I don't know how, or I would. I need the fogs to go off with high beams in PA. I was hoping someone had a similar issue, or a thought on where to trouble shoot.

rewiring is pretty simple if u dont over think it. just cut all wires out and run a switch in cab to power and to relay and connect relay to power and ground and also to the fog lights and ground out the lights and ur good to go. ill find a thread on here for ya that has a better explaination of it

Thanks XJ-92. Would that work to shut off the lights at high beam? The only part I didn't understand was the wire to hi/low/ignition. Where and how do you do that?
Does anyone else have any thoughts on the factory set up. I think it could be a loose connection in some place, but my electrical knowledge is limited at best. Could it be a bad connection for the relay switch, loose ground wire, loose connection harness, or would those cause it to not work at all.

Thanks. Here in PA, that wouldn't pass inspection. Could anybody else offer a trouble shooting guide or solution? Any jeep weekend mechanics around Pittsburgh that can help?

Wrcst3, did you figure out what melted the original fog light switch? Check all fusues agianst fsm or fuse diagram to make sure someone has not put a bigger fuse in place. Would also check fog light and headlight grounds.

Well I'll throw a few cents into the question, I have a 96 with the original light set-up which was working good until a few years ago. The lights remained ON with low beams and turned OFF when the high beams were selected. I remember there are 2 relays behind the front left headlight in front of the air filter box. These two relays filled up with water and my lights stopped working. I tried to replace them with aftermarket relays, but still did not work. I now have no power coming to the switch on the dash. Have been too busy on weekends to really dive into tracing the wires back from the lights. The schematic shows the wires are tied into a set of relays somewhere, so I figure the relays are shot. I checked all the fuses for lights and they are ok.
With your light staying on- this sounds like the relays are shorting and making a contact for low beams, and turning off the lights when switched to high beam. Where the relays are located is a question. Also may be your dask switch, try hooking another switch to the wires and see if the light behave differently.
