Default finding LSD

OK I was wondering if there is a why to look at like 1999 1998 grand cherokees and know if they have LSD that will fit my 89 cherokee. They all have the same axle but how can I tell if it has a stock LSD and correct gearing with out having to pull apart. Also I have a 99 wranlger here with the same axle to look at as well. Oh and I am talking about the rear.
Thanks

grands have a D44a but gearing is likely to be 3.73 if it has LSD. Only safe way to identify gearing is to crack the pumpkins.

I was looking at the cover for the diff and its the same as mine or so I thought. I will check the tags and see if I see anything. Are there any certain model types that come with the LSD or is it kinda a hit or miss type thing?

Do you have a D35 axel? Grands have those also, but same problem most of the LSD came with the tow package which had 3.73 gears. I have yet to find a 3.55 in a grand with the LSD. You can buy a LSD diff carrier w/gears new for about $250 if you shop around. Then again a locker costs about the same.

Yes I believe for all the chekcing I have done that I have a D35 rear axle and a D30 front. So, are u saying mine has a 3.55 gearing and the newer one has a 3.73?
If thats the case cant I just swap both front and rear if it has LSD rear?

Okay.. Well... first problem... The Trac-Loc for a non C-clip D-35 is different than one from a C-clip rear...

Second the carrier break for the Dana 35 is 3.55 and down.. So... you need a different Trac-Loc for 3.73 gears than for 3.55 gears.

Third... you can't just pull a carrier out of another axle and slap it in yours... You have to have it set-up for the specific axle. This is the reason Lunch Box lockers are so popular. They are around $250, and you don't have to mess with having the gears set-up again.

Your XJ most likely has 3.55 gears.. Most of the Grands that came with a LSD also came 3.73. So yes, might might want both axels if you get one. Other issue is that the Grands are Coil spring rears and the XJ is Leaf springs, not bolt in.

I would get a locker or get an LSD kit for the axel you have. Better yet Find a C8.25 axel.
