Default Field find, need direction

Bought this 96 cherokee sport, 4.0, 5 speed! We took fuel tank out cleaned it, fuel pump came on, blew out fuel filter! Jeep will turn over and over start, die almost immediately! Had not been started in 6 years, found it in a field! Guy took $500 for it!

Anyone think plugs, wires, distributor? Needs a battery I assume, what are you thinking? Low fuel pump pressure! I will take best guesses here on what to try!

Hey pretty cool! Normally there are others here that know better than me. Might be something that is related to a devious invention..yours has an "auto shut down relay" That's right, someone "improved" them to to where they will shut down automatically! So sell it and get a Renix Jeep, OR, check all the mini fuses. Might be if the ASD relay is not functioning, it will fire but not run. Not sure there. An 02 sensor puter feed wire shorting, front or rear might blow that fuse. 17?

96 is "special" You may. or may not be able to buy a fuel pump, for example. 95, OK, 97 OK, 96, maybe you are OK, maybe not, as they changed things during 96.

Give this a shot for fun>>

The "Key Tricks"
Older (OBDI) models - Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock"). The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It will never flash more than 9 times, so watch for those pauses!

well if it fires you must have at least _some_ spark.
I'd check the fuel pressure first of all. Then you could try cranking/starting it a few times and pull the plugs one at a time to check for fuel (is it wet?) and spark (lie it on the head and get someone to crank while you watch for a nice fat blue spark).

Ok! I started with the fuel tank, cleaned it, went ahead and put a pump in as well! Replaced the fuel filter, soaked the injectors and the injector rod in cleAner! The wires and distributor are good, I put new plugs in even though the others had a pretty good spark, but they were corroded!

Still ok start or it would start and then almost short out and die! The battery clamps and wires were corroded so I cut them back and put new clamps on and boom! Runs like a top! Thanks for all the help and advice!

Kool! But wowh... You gotta do some stuff. All fluids including brake system flush. (both diffs? T-case, tranny,, engine). Lube, hit all the zirks, ball-joints, steering and drive-line) Clean out that mouse nest under your air filter.

I hope you didn't buy a fuel pump because of my post...(no harm though!) Other posters have had a real glitch with there 96. Do you happen to know what month you have? If it's not too faded, it might be on the drivers door.

I just decided to make it all new to be safe! My door panel says July of 1996!

I am replacing all fluids! Already flushed radiator! New air cleaner, removed and waned IAC sensor which eliminated the check engine code 25!

Oil and diffs today!

I have a soft spot for 96s. I like the old school interior and they have the side bars and low down torque of later XJs.
