"A little better" is an understatement. Once you have a real FSM, you'll never open the Chilton or Haynes manuals again. They're worse than worthless because they're written for a range of years and have a lot of info in them that is just plain wrong for your year. Having a real FSM takes your troubleshooting, diagnostics and repair to the next level.
At one point I had a Haynes manual. I threw it out.
I have both the $8 Pacific Coast scan and a printed FSM. I have yet to notice any differences. The good thing about the PDF is that you can use the search function to help you find what you need, read up on the procedure before you do it, and print the pages you need when you're ready to head to the garage. On the other hand, I really like having the grease-stained paper FSM in the garage with me, so I end up using both.
If I were starting from scratch, I'd download the PDF first, then set an alert on Ebay to let me know when new paper copies are listed and wait for a deal. Every now and then someone will post one for $50.

I've always found the FSM to contain more than enough information for my purposes, but then again I'm not rebuilding engines and transmissions or anything like that. Typically they contain a good deal of the information in the other manuals (if not all of it), but not the actual manuals, so you'd have to get them separately. I've always been able to find free PDF's.

Personally, I'm hoping to be able to buy a new JL in a couple years and my plan is to include providing a copy of the FSM as a non-negotiable part of the deal. LOL!

FYI, for free manuals, a couple of the XJ groups on Facebook have file repositories under the "Files" links on the left hand side of each page. Unfortunately I can't link these from my work computer (FB access is restricted), but you can search for these group names in the FB search bar:
Jeep Cherokee XJ Support Group
Club XJ
Not only are many of the FSMs there in PDF format, but there are also factory parts catalogs, specification lists, diagnostic manuals, manuals for transfer cases, etc., so in some years you can put together a complete set of factory manuals. The only down side of using those manuals is that many of them are divided up into many smaller PDFs, one PDF per chapter. The single PDF you get from Pacific Coast is easier to navigate and search. But since these are free, you get more than your money's worth.

Wow, that's irritating. I would send them an email and complain.

Old fart with a wrench
Damn! I was going to tell you to go to Cruiser54's website and download one for free. At least you got one. The best part of the FSM is the wiring diagrams and connector pin-outs.
