Factory Service Manual : 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport

The Chilton and Hayes manuals for 2001 Cherokees seem to be kind of crap. Is buying a downloadable factory service manual the best way to go here if I want something a little better then those two?

The cheapest I can find for the physical used manuals online is about $120.

Too bad they don't have the 1996 XJ FSM.

Old link. Found that one a long time ago. Pacific coast manuals is where I got my last one. I think some of the years are mixed up, though, IIRC, but don't remember which ones...

The Pacific Coast '96 manual is actually a '97 manual.

I bought one only to find this out. Emailed them about it but they never responded.

The PCM was right for my 99 XJ and 04 WJ both at $7.95 each.

"A little better" is an understatement. Once you have a real FSM, you'll never open the Chilton or Haynes manuals again. They're worse than worthless because they're written for a range of years and have a lot of info in them that is just plain wrong for your year. Having a real FSM takes your troubleshooting, diagnostics and repair to the next level.

At one point I had a Haynes manual. I threw it out.

I have both the $8 Pacific Coast scan and a printed FSM. I have yet to notice any differences. The good thing about the PDF is that you can use the search function to help you find what you need, read up on the procedure before you do it, and print the pages you need when you're ready to head to the garage. On the other hand, I really like having the grease-stained paper FSM in the garage with me, so I end up using both.

If I were starting from scratch, I'd download the PDF first, then set an alert on Ebay to let me know when new paper copies are listed and wait for a deal. Every now and then someone will post one for $50.
