Same block it will be fine as long as you take everything off the old one and put it on the new one.

I did this on my 98, had to swap motor mount brackets and some pulley's on the front since the Grand uses a single fan and the xj uses 2. Other then that it dropped right in. It bolted right up to the AX15 in my xj and it came from a grand with auto.

I was going to use everything of my xj. mine has a thrown rod. I spoke with the guy at the salvage yard and told him mine was an auto. he came up with a 95 grand cherokee 4.0 with an auto. he cut me a great deal. is there anyway to find out what tranny the grand had? thanks for the help guys.

It has the 42re. They used the 42re in all 4.0 Grands from 93.5 through present. The other transmission options were the AW4 in the first year they were built and the AX-15 that was offered for the first two years.

The 4.0 in the grand is the same as in the xj,just need to use different rubber inserts on the motor mounts,it will bolt up to the aw4 or ax-15.

It will bolt right up. The block is the same. I'm dropping a 95 Grand motor in my 90 XJ right now. I just have to use the other crap off my old motor to hook up to my 90's electronics, motor mounts and other small stuff.
