Dumb Question about Dist.Cap...
I know this is a lame question but I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee and I have a question for anyone with a 2.8L V6, where is the No.1 Spark Plug wire position on the Distributor Cap as you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine? The Haynes manual says its in about the 7 O'clock position but the No.1 wire that I replaced was in the 3'Oclock position and it seems to start OK and runs OK(maybe a slight miss) Does it matter where No.1 is on the Dist.Cap if they fire in numerical order anyway? Any help would be appreciated. Yep, I am a newby! Oh,neither the Old or the New cap had a No.1 embossed on the top of the cap.

Once the cap is on correctly you have to have the wires in the correct order or it won't run correctly.

No offense but I know the cap goes on one way and it is seated correctly and the little hooks are turned in to hold it down, but I just needed to know which hole the No.1 wire would correspond to? I do have them already in numerical order on the cap, 1,2,3,4,5,6 in that order I just didnt know if it mattered where No.1 started.

Well actually you have to locate plug 1 and then set them according to firing order..you can't just go 1,2,3,4,5,6 if the firing order is 1,4,2,5,3,6 or something like that sort..WOuld cause a mis and the engine wouldn't run right and could cause damage in the long term..

But this diagram is from the Autozone website which is wrong as far as where No.1 wire goes.
http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us...rInfoPages.htm
Mine would be the 3rd engine down...2.8L V6

Ok fine,
Then No.1 is where the #1 piston is at TDC.
Back to the basics..........
Where is #1 on a SBF? Where ever you want it
A SBC will run at idle 180 out just fine.
