Default Differentials

So according to my googling.. I have the 'Dana 30 high pinion - reverse cut - 27 spline, 1.16" diameter shafts, 7.13" ring gear - used 84-99 (some axles through 91 are vacuum disconnect, 92+ are non-disconnect, 89-95 with ABS have 5-297x u-joints, all 95+ have 5-297x u-joints, all others have 5-260x u-joints)' in the front

and

'Dana 35 c-clip - 27 spline, 1.18" diameter shafts, 7.58" ring gear, 2.62" axle tube - used 90-01' in the rear as I have ABS (which doesn't work, at the moment )

Since I don't know ANYTHING about differentials... would someone explain what all these values mean.. and what does this:

(some axles through 91 are vacuum disconnect, 92+ are non-disconnect, 89-95 with ABS have 5-297x u-joints, all 95+ have 5-297x u-joints, all others have 5-260x u-joints)

mean..

The vacuum disconnect is a shift motor located on the passenger side of the front axle housing. Some, but not all 91 and older models had a 2 piece passenger side axle shaft that required a collar the lock them together. The vacuum shift motors are notorious for failure and will not allow the front axle to engage in 4wd.

The 260 and 297 u-joints are the size difference. The 297 is a larger u-joint and is considerably stronger than the 260 which is prone to failure when subjected to heavy off road use with oversized tires.

Your XJ being a 96 will not have the vac disco front axle and will have the larger u-joints.

just to add to winstons reply, the 35c-clip is just the axle model, the main thing here is c-cip,which is how the axle is retained in the housing, most would prefer not to have a c-clip type axle because they can actually come out of the housing if the axle breaks, where as axles that are held in by bolts on the outside will not,27 spline is the number of splines on the end of the axle,1.18 is the axle dia, weak, not good if you plan on larger tires and serious 4wheelin,7.5/8 is the size of your ring gear it is 7.5/8" tall, which driven by the pinion gear, the 2.62 is the outside dia of the axle tube.
Hope this helps.
There is alot of info on diffs on the internet

Thanks guys..

What kind of differentials are these? Do they have to have a special lubricant like LSDs or something? :s

And the Jeep would be kept stock for the rest of the life.. so no worries there.

If a friction modifier (LSD additive) is required, there will usually be a tag stating such stuck under one of the upper cover screws. Alternatively, have a bottle on hand the first time you do a fluid change - if you see clutch packs under the side gears (where the inner ends of the shafts go,) use two ounces of additive right before you dump the gear oil in. If you don't use the FM, save it for later.

You will not have an LSD up front unless it has been added by a previous owner.

The rear axle will be either a Chrysler 8.25" or a Dana 35C - sounds like you've narrowed it down to the D35. NB: a D35C isn't necessarily a C-clip axle - this has to be verified visually (a D35, likewise, may or may not be C-clip.) All the "C" indicates is "Custom" - that means it did not leave the factory as an assembled axle, but merely as a welded housing assembly. The internals were assembled by the vehicle manufcturer, hence "custom."

Just about all AMC-era D35s (1984-1988.5) were bolt-in axles - after that, even odds on being C-clip or bolt-in. Easiest way to identify is to pull the cover and look - if it's a C-clip type axle, you'll be able to see the C-clips located in counterbores in the side gears (toward the inside of the differential housing.) A non-C-clip D35 axle is a bolt-in swap, with the biggest bit of work being bleeding the brakes afterwards.

Drop by your local JEEP dealer and ask someone in the parts/service dept to tell you what axle you have. They can decode your VIN.

No JEEP dealer here! They introduced JEEP here about 15 years ago but failed and I dont know why.. but people have been getting Jeeps from china, dubai, iran, iraq and saudi arabia, most of the europe.. etc No JEEP dealership is here. No parts, there are two guys who deal in Jeep parts, and they too have a limited stock / variety of course.

If I post my VIN here, would someone be able to decode information? Just asking.

This is a link, to request the original Buildsheet from JEEP. It list all the components and options installed on your Jeep when Manufactured. Not sure if it will work, you not being here in the US, but its worth a try.

sometimes there will be a build sheet taped inside the drivers door, under the inner door panel.

You can determine your axle type,if it is an 8.25 it will have 3" axle tubes and the carrier housing will be squared off on the bottom, not the diff cover itself, but the carrier housing.
Do you have an owners manual,it will tell you which oil to use,or a repair manual.
