That is what I was always told to use. Seems to work just fine. In fact, when I order some SOLID diff covers they sent me a tube of RTV sealant.

Unless you go mudding every day and need to change your diff fluid once a week (in which case a LubeLocker gasket would be a good idea), RTV is the way to go. Cheap and easy to use

Any reccomendations on brand or weight to use?

IV got a 88 and 90 4x4s that I plan on doing all the axels. I don't have any lockers or LSD.

That's what I use.

As for weight, 75w-90 is what you want. I used synthetic but pick your poison

Well I saw Walmart has 75-90 and 90-140 I believe for about 5 bucks for a bottle. The synthetic blend was about $13 a bottle. Does the synthetic really help anything in the diffs?

Once I get the hang of doing tthe fluid I will probly change it every 5000 miles or so.

If you're changing it every 5k, no need for synthetic. I run synthetic and it is $13/bottle. The semi is about $7.

Is 5k miles too often? I'd rather just keep it maintained and considering I could get a bottle for about 5 bucks and about an hour of work doing it so often wouldn't be a pain really.

Changing the diff fluid is something I'd do as routine maintenance about every other year. Really depends how much you drive it and what you do with it. If it's just a DD that doesnt see much use offroad at all, you really dont need to every 5k. But if it's a trail rig and you submerge your axles in mud/water often, you'd need to change it more frequently

For me the only reason not to use black is something long, on a hot day, it WILL skin and harden fast. Blue gives more time. I have used the orange on my rain collar for the house wood stove, don't use it there now..Guess I'm "stuck" with old ways. I'll put black on both sides of the gasket, just don't know any better!. (yea, I see them with just blue, seems fine). Just my .02. I guess that "hypoid" oil is not suppose to brake down, I just top mine off.

Do you ever tow anything?

If not, go with the 80w-90

If yes, go with the 85w-140
