Default Which differential do I have?

Just replaced the gear oil in my rear diff and it looked a little different on the inside than I was expecting.

I thought I would see the spider gears inside the inner cylinder thing, instead there are those two springs...?

I also thought I'd be able to turn the two rear wheels independent of each other (isn't that what the differential is for? To allow the wheels to turn at different speeds on corners?) instead they are locked together, can't turn the two independent at all.

Which differential do I have? 8.25, or Dana? Regular or limited slip? Locker? And do I need different oil or maintainance than the standard 75w90 gear oil and a good cleaning?

Thanks guys, I've been posting a lot recently and haven't finished the other services, trying to get everything done that I want to before I start driving it so I have a maintainance baseline.

BTW it's a 1992 Cherokee Laredo, 4.0, AW4.

Chrysler 8.25.

Looks like a locker.

I'd put a high quality gear oil in that says it's safe for LS applications.

That is either an Eaton Posi, Yukon Duragrip or another generic brand based on that design. It is a clutch type limited slip.

It reminds me of a GM Positraction, which I believe was made by Eaton. It uses clutch packs behind the axle side gears preloaded by springs that are allowed to slip until sufficient torque is applied to lock them up. You'll need a friction modifier added to your 75W-90. Actually, I'd use 75W-140 synthetic.

Ok, so it will allow the wheels to lock under torque, but slip on pavement turns fine? Do I need to worry about locking and unlocking them based on terrain?

And I guess I need to redo the service with LS specific gear oil. No worries there, I'd rather have the right stuff in it than be lazy.

What gear oil did you use? Most of it has the limited slip additive already in it. If it doesn't then you can add the limited slip additive to what's in there now.

Most diff oils now have a small amount of friction modifier in them, however most manufacturers recommend the addition of around 4 ounces of additional "juice" be added.

There is no need to add it if the gear oil already has the friction modifier in it. The more friction modifier you add the more the clutches slip which makes the unit less effective.

I used peak brand 80w-90 gl-5 limited slip. What's the major difference in the viscosity?

That's fine, is it non Synthetic? Auburn and Eaton both recommend regular gear oil over synthetic.

80w90 is good, that's what Auburn recommends on their website.
