So today coming home from school I was turning off of the highway, the ?yolkshaft? on my 2000 8.25 sheared off and stopped me dead in my tracks. I have not looked deeply into what exacly is bad but I know the shaft no longer sticks out of my axle.
My question is, how hard is it to swap the axle for another 8.25 with the same gears and what years will "bolt-up" to the jeep with no problems...

Get a 8.25 from a 97+ xj. Make sure u get the correct gearing if u got 4wd. Its a direct bolt in and is very easy to do. can be done with basic hand tools and a buddy to help

So How bad are the bolts to get out with hand tools?
I am at college so my space is limited.
Other than looking at the ring and pinion, How can I tell what ration the axle has?
My build sheet says 3.55.

If u get it from a junk yard just tell them what u need and gears u have and they will get it for u, unless its a pick and pull or off another rig. If its an auto 4.0 4wd without tow package then it should have 3.55 gears. With basic hand tools it will be pretty easy spray everything with pb blaster before trying to loosen anything. Also using a torch is helpful too. Heat is the best way to loosen a stuck bolt.

Are there any write-ups on this? Also I do not have access to a torch, air tools, or power tools (sawzall, drill, ect).
