Post Deep water now having some issues.

hey all, hate to have this as a first thread but I'm coming up short with the search for my particular issues. So went wheeling in New Hampshire last Saturday and came upon a water crossing that wasn't incredibly deep but had a step down into it that sent a splash over the hood/headlights aka right into the air box, sucked some water and had a little in the intake. Jeep shut off and we pulled it out took off the air intake and it cranked back over and started and ran fine all the way back to MA (about an hour and a half). Later that night it wouldn't shift out of first (aw4) and then that corrected itself. Next morning wouldn't start for three different crank attempts and did the same thing this morning and last. Will start with some coaxing them will die at the end of my street and start back up and run okay. But feels like I now don't have first gear? If I hammer the pedal it has some torque but won't rev high into rpms. The submersion was 6/9/18 as of 6/11/18 I have done cap, rotor, plug wires, plugs gapped to 0.035, oil change (didn't look murky but figured it was a good idea) and filter, cranked a couple cycles with plugs out and sprayed in some WD40, was on an almost empty tank of gas and added heet fuel treatment which is supposed to eliminate moisture in fuel and filled tank with shell 93 octane. Still started the same this morning with the usual die and restart and same this afternoon after work. I'm at a loss. Thinking possibilities could be: water in fuel tank, fuel pump, or filter. Or start looking at sensors like tps? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Well at this point youve pretty well covered the basics. Water does bad things unfortunately. Waterlogged harness connectors can cause all kinds of headaches. Unhook the baterry, then start unplugging everything. Blow out connectors with compressed air if youve got access to it. If not, they make "contact cleaner" in a spray can. Leave it all unhooked and let everyting dry out.

Hook everything back up and see what happens.

If you havent done it yet, do a drain n fill on the trans and axles. Those axle seals keep grease in and dirt out. But they dont keep water out.

Throttle position sensors don’t do well after getting wet is what I’ve read here many times. Also a bad tps could cause shifting, starting and running issues.

Id maybe let it sit for a while (maybe with a fan) as the connectors are most likely soaked and arcing signals and such causing the havoc youre experiencing. Or like above clean them out

X2 on the throttle position sensor. I hydro locked my 2001 xj and after changing the oil, spark plugs, and air filter it would start but wasn't right. It was shifting weird, it wouldn't shift into overdrive sometimes then it wouldn't start out in 1st gear sometimes, just not right. I replaced the throttle position sensor and it fixed everything. I also now run a snorkel, no more water in the engine

I'd also suggest adding a little dab of dielectric grease to all of the connector ends. Where you have brass to brass contact. The grease pushes out moisture and keeps your connectors insulated. I do this to every connector I have in the motorcycles I restore. I know that when I splash through deep puddles, my connectors at least will be able to continue to function.

TPS can really give some fun symptoms (shifting) been there a couple times, IAC possible, water can really skitz out stuff.

ide pressure test cylinders wet/dry to see if anything really nasty happened, you drove a good while just fine though you said.

if its fuel pump you could test pressure at the rail.

do you have any other friends with a 97+ jeep? you could try a PCM swap for the hell of it.

Replaced the TPS and has been running better than it ever has in conjunction with the new plugs cap and rotor (knock on wood) thanks for the insight and happy jeeping 🤘🏼
