Default 1990 after deep water stall, No start?

Alright, well I have a 1990 Cherokee 4.0l. Was out messing around and came across a rather large puddle (more like small pond) and was following a buddy through it. Well long story short, I slide into the deep water and stalled. Turned the ignition off, and got pulled out. Pulled the air filter our it was soaked, but there was not a lot of water in the airbox. Tried to start it, it cranked once and then i got a clicking noise. We hooked up another battery up to mine to see if it was not enough power. Didn't seem to be the cause. Still won't start, I left it at the bottom of the mountain to dry and try tomorrow to see if I just have wet connections. So I'm curious as to what to do, and what might be the issue. Hyrolock? Fried my starter solenoid? new battery? Any help would be much appreciated

Before you try to start it anymore check the intake for water. I had the same problem and didn't see the water in the intake and continued to try in start it and blew the rods through the oil pan. Don't do like i did. Check for water in the intake before anymore start attempts.

X2 on checking the intake. Also remove all the plugs to check for water.

Any time. Water don't compress like burning fuel does and can detonate the motor.I hope you didn't hurt anything . Good luck.

I know that if I remove the plugs tomorrow and let it crank and water shoots out then it was hydrolocked. I'm going to try that tomorrow to see if it was the case. Any other suggestions of what might be the issue?

Also try turn by hand to make sure its not locked. If its not locked and still will not turn over check the start. I don't know if the XJs use the same starter as CJs but every time I take my CJ out to the mud holes here Fl I lose my starter.

im thinking he means turn the rotating assembly by hand via the harmonic dampener to make sure its not seized. ill bring my breaker bar. also get a can of compressed air to blow out your electrical connections. and if you can find a good voltemeter itll help...i got a crappy one ill bring. hopefully the ***** just fires right up...ive been reading and from what i got it could be the starter, the ECM, the distributor or the starter selinoid...or you could be completly ****ed. i think you should be fine though...hopefully

Put a I think what was a 19mm socket on front of the crank and see if the motor will turn all this tells you is if the motor is locked up or not.

pull the spark plugs before you try turning the rotating assembly, no compression in the cylinders will make it easier to turn, and if theres any water in the cylinders itll shoot it out...
