If i wanted to replace my dana 35c with a dana 44 what would i be looking for in a dana 44? Out of what vehicle? What modifications would i have to do?

find an older cherokee with one in it, around a 87 model or so and bolt it right in There pretty hard to find some times though. If no luck finding one, I recomend a Ford 8.8. Just about the same amount of work involved as far as making the brakes, drive shaft, spring perches, and shocks all work and the 8.8 is much stronger.

i wouldn't call the 8.8 about as much work as a bolt in dana44.

it has disc brakes, which are an upgrade and not too difficult to adapt to the xj, but require playing with the proportioning valve to make work correctly. 8.8's have a flange, not sure of what the 8.8 comes with bolted to the flange, but you can get a yoke for it either way and ditch the flange. spring perches and shock mounts, again, bolt in vs measuring and welding.

and i disagree with the much stronger as well.

the 8.8 is stout when built properly, but stock for stock, a 44 takes the cake.

for me to run an 8.8 it would need
welded tubes (they will spin on you)
a real locker (weak carriers)
diff cover (you can dent a stock one by throwing a nickel at it)
c clip eliminator (c-clips suck)
no flange (seen enough of them fail in my time)

I was saying its as much work as having to build a 44 to work if you can't find one that will just bolt in.

If its in a Cherokee, it's cast. it will say D44a if its aluminum and those are in Grand Cherokees. I recomend going and getting that D44 out the junkyard for it goes away asap.
