hi I have been having trouble with my front axle since i bought the jeep two years ago. the axle seal on the disconnect side started leaking and i replaced it. now its leaking again two months later. the ball joints are shot, and all together i can get a junk yard axle for cheaper. about 150. my question is about swapping the non disco axle into a 91 cherokee 4.0. will everything be the same besides not having the cad? and what are your opinions on the two?

Well why would you do that? You will loose the ability to lock your front end hence no 4 wheel drive. Stick with the same axle you have if your going to replace the whole thing.

It doesn't matter. 4WD is a function of the transfercase and the vac-disco is not needed if a single piece axle shaft is used.

The 91+ HP D30 is a stonger housing. Try to find one that is under an ABS equipped XJ and you'll get shafts with the larger 297x/760 u-joints. You'll also find the larger u-joints in 94+ HP non-ABS XJ's and in all ZJ's

The Non-disco is a great swap! But trying to find one at the JY that doesn't also need to be rebuilt may be difficult.

Cool

I agree the non disco is a good swap/upgrade, once this is done all you have to do is pull the go lever!

thanks for some input guys. i was also wondering if both axle tube seals were in the differential in the non disco. i hate that seal by the disconnect.

ZJ's are all low pinion axles. So you don't want one of them..

The shafts, not the entire axle.

Yep the shafts from a none all wheel drive will work.

The ZJ's with all-wheel-drive have CV joints instead of U-joints.

Would it be worthwile to hunt down a set of those axles with the CV instead of ujoint?
The boot over the joint would keep out all the crap but how would you maintain them ie. regrease them on occasion?
And how about strength. I had one on a drive shaft of a van I once owned and was always a little nervous about it after modding the engine. Broke a ring gear but never the CV.

No, the CV joints are weaker than the 297x/760 u-joint.
