Crunchy rear end
Ok so about a month ago I got rid if my busted D35 for a junk yard 8.25 29 spline. It ran well and gave me no problems. Now I'm am starting to notice that when I am between 40-45 MPH, and let off the gas, I hear a crunching sound coming from the rear. It only lasts a fraction of a second and then it's fine. Note that this only happens if I let off between 40-45 MPH. If I'm cruising at 55 and let off, I hear nothing as I slow down. Anyone have any clue what it could be? I did nothing to the axle. I pulled it out of a jeep in a junk yard and through it under mine. Never messed with the diff. Thanks.

I say get a D44 from a cherokee and swap that in The only thing i can think of is it must have had a problem before but it just started to get worse. Maybe theres a little play in the diff. It probably wasn't run for a while. Check the gear oil in there too.

My Dana 35 does the same thing at 25mph. I've got 310k miles on it. I greased the axle bearings with no change. I'm guessing the diff or pinion bearings or the stock limited slip diff is worn.

My D35 always makes a thud noise whenever I hit the gas, I figured its just old and does that because of the posi. On a hill from a stop i can really notice it, but theres no crunching in it. Just a thud. Everything thuds on that old 89.

I checked my driveshaft, its solid. Doesn't move at all no matter where I push or pull it. I think the thud is just how it is. As for crunching, the u joints might be the case.
