cruise control
Hi everybody - I wonder if someone has ever had a problem getting the cruise control to work - I have a 1998 cheroke - mint condition - except for the cruise - I don't really need it but would like to have everything in working order - anyway - when I try to "set" it - it's just dead - checked the wiring - fuses etc - but no luck - anyone have any suggestions?

Make sure the cruise is on of course. Hows the fuses? Does the light on the dash come on? I also have a 98 XJ so if you need any pics of the cruise system just let me know.

Check the hoses from the cuise control servo (4" round looking thing towards the passenger compartment behind the battery). The pvc hose or fittings maybe cracked. Mine had a crack right near an elbow. I replaced mine with rubber vacuum hose at about age 10. It has been working ever since.

Well wait, since the light on the dash doesn't come on which means it's an ELECTRICAL problem. So first of all you have to make sure the fuses are good and that it's being powered.

I have a 96 cherokee and am having the same problem. all my lines are good. these things apparently have the ability to set trouble codes for the cruise, as i learned tonight when i hooked my snap-on scanner up to it. it may not always light the check engine light, however. worth a shot, might point you in the right direction.

If the light is not coming on then checking the hoses might not solve your problem. But, it will only take a minute and it might save you some time later.
I agree it is probably electrical.

also i have read that the clock spring (in the steering wheel) is often the problem as well. From what i have read mine is out as i have the cruise option but does not work same as yours and my horn does not work but will honk with remote lock... They were about $75-$100 i believe when i looked a few months back. Check into that if everything else checks out.

The on/off switch is a little funky. I have to press it a few times before the the light comes on and the cruise works.

found the problem
someone had shorted out the NSS switch at the fuse box - found a small wire coming out of the fuse box and someone spliced a wire and grounded it out to the frame - got rid of the splice and everything works great.
thanks for everybody`s help
