hey everybody,
i have a 99' cherokee...when i make turns left or right, i hear a noise, sounds like its coming from my front passenger side, under the car. The noise is almost like a clicking/popping piece of metal and this only happens when i make turns. The harder i turn, the more violent the noise is.

 

Had the same problem on my old 90 xj turned out to be a couple of busted ball joints.

 

Is the truck 4wd?

If so, axle ujoint for sure.

 

That may be the case if it pops when your not moving.

But if its a constant "click click click" while moving, chances are its a ujoint on the axle.

 

yeah its just when i am making turns, not when i am going straight/ idle. and exactly as you described, a constant clicking when making turns. how would i go about replacing the u joints? expensive? labor intensive?

 

easy as cake.

dis assembly is:
wheels
calipers
rotors
hub
axelshaft
in that order
and assembly is reverse when you have installed new u joints.


youll need 2 U joints (roughly 25 each autozone)
should take you about 2-4 hours or so if your slow with dis assembly and assembly

Hit stuff with pb blaster. There is a trick to popping the hub off using the power steering.

to be honest Id rather have him use pb blaster and be cautious, rather than him asking how to remove the snapped off bolt from the steering knuckle in a few days.

 

Probably the front wheel u-joints as said. After doing this job more than once, my preferred approach is to pull the hubs and then take the axles to a shop and have them press out the old u-joints. Saves a lot of time and hassle. Getting the old u-joints out is a P.I.T.A and a shop usually does not charge that much if you bring the axles to them. There are a few tricks to getting the hubs off - do a search. I just prefer using the BFH method. Also, don't be afraid to use some heat on the hub bolts on the hub assembly side before removing them. Makes it easier.
