Cherokee Quits
My 89 xj just quit running when I pulled up to a light. I sprayed it with starting fluid and nothing. 10 min later it started with starting fluid but would quit about every 1/2 mile. Changed the chrank shaft sensor, and no help. THen the fuel pump and fuel filter. Cleaned all elec connections. It will start sometimes and run fine for about a mile and then quit and restart only with starting fluid. SOmetimes it will start by itself but usually needs starting fluid and will only go about 1 mile before it quits. It acts like electrical is quitting. HELP

Mike, check the fuel pump ballast resistor on the driver's side inner fender. White ceramic deal about 3" long with a wire plugged into each end. The resistor itself can be bad or the connectors can be loose. It's okay to bypass it as it's only there to reduce fuel pump noise.

Thanks, bypassed the block and still the problem. It will always start with starting fluid. It will run for a few minutes and then it will die. THought the fuel line might be plugged so I blew out the line and return, still no change. Changed rotor and cap just incase the issue was weak spark. No change Any help is welcome

Good chance your fuel pump is dying or the hose from the pump to the fuel module in the tank is crappy. Just for fun, let's move all the relays on the passenger side inner fender down one spot and see what happens.

I thought it was to alert the Moderator of any issue. Isn't it inappropriate to post OEM questions in the Advanced section of the forum? I thought that's what you were saying. Sorry.

This pretty much sums up your concerns. The Advanced section is misnamed.

One of the 1st things I did was change the fuel pump, including the short hose in the tank. I have thought that possibly the new pump was bad. I don't know what you mean by moving the modules down one notch

The 4 relays on the passenger inner fender. Move them all down one space so they're in a different receptacle. That way, if your fuel pump relay is bad, it will be in a different slot and a good relay in it's place.

Did you check your crank sensor. It's located on the top of the transmission bellhousing drivers side. 2 bolt. Try checking connection, cleaning it or if replacing. I have the same problem and that was it. Hope this helps.

I found 4 square units together in a row. Are those the relays you are talking about? WHen you say to move them, are you saying to move each one to the next ones spot and move the last one to the 1st relays position? SOrry for my ignorance. Thank you, Mike
