Cherokee Gauge cluster not working
hey everyone for starters I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee classic. Bone stock. Basically I'm having a gauge cluster issue where none of my instruments want to work. I've had this issue before and cleaning the connectors worked on my old Cherokee. I sat on the computer for 3 hours yesterday looking at constant "clean the connectors and it worked" posts but it's not working for me. So far My check list includes battery terminals, ground off battery, firewall engine ground, tried another gauge cluster, cleaned conecters, swapped computers, and swapped air bag control modules. Nothing will get my guages to work. I tried testing them where you hold the miles reset and turn the key. The guages work when I do so but go right back to dead after the test. My odometer shows up and all the other lights work, but the gas, oil pressure, temp, tach, battery, and speedo do not. Any suggestions?
I am having the same problem on my '01 Limited. Below is what I have tried to no avail. Hopefully we can get to the bottom of this.
- Preformed service bullitin 08-15- 99, replacing the connectors to the gauge cluster.
- Replaced Crankshaft position sensor
- Replaced Throttle position sensor
- Spark Plugs
Swapped out following known good parts from my '02 TJ
- oil pressure sender
- PCM (swapped from '02TJ and another '01 XJ)
- Ignition rail
Now, I also have another issue that I hope is related. When going down a steep hill sometimes the XJ will start sputtering. It will also sometime sputter right after startup/on the freeway during a long drive. Restarting fixes this issue.
Things I would like to check
- Trace remaining grounds and wire harnesses to check for any broken wires.
- Replace camshaft position sensor
- replace/clean MAP Sensor
Hope we can help each other out.

Examine #9 fuse in the Junction Block.

It may. Pull it out and examine the pin cavities in the JB for corrosion. Replace the fuse for good measure.
The IOD fuse in the PDC feeds the instrument cluster as well, but you'd know if it were blown.

I am also from time to time getting a NO BUS readout on the odometer. This thing is driving me nuts!

Has anyone tried searching for an answer.

I've been involved in the instrument cluster inop/no bus threads so much I've lost interest in repeating what I've said.

Read thru this thread. It shows how to test the CCD Bus.
The instrument cluster must be installed for these tests.
It may not give you an absolute answer but at least it will eliminate some possible fault(s).

Note that the OP of this thread was too lazy to follow up.
