cherokee 89 auto transmission questions
Brother just got a 89, still in prev. owners yard. Owner said he can drive it for
a while 5 to 20 minutes and all of a sudden no go. I read about the quick
flush=draining the pan. Need to know how much we need on hand to refill. I most likely will have to tow him home probably 40 miles if no power to
wheels.
Has the Japan trans can't remember the name
1. drain and fill trans. and also add trans X
2. disconnect TCU and that is all I know.
any thing else right now that I missed? Thanks Hoot or Ken , also got back on my own computer again.

When I changed the fluid in mine, 4 quarts made it a bit over-full. (Dexron III/Merc stuff)
Maybe, if it's like mine, it has 3 solenoids , and one may be acting up when the oil gets warm ??
I'm no authority on the AW4....

I'm no authority on the AW4, if that is what yours is. The oil filter in the trans is a fine mesh screen & not a paper type filter
Others on this forum have more info on these than I do

Drain and refill using the drain plug is 3-4 Qts. Skip the Trans-x.
You can pull the TCU fuse and see if it works correctly shifting by hand, starting in 1-2.
Check that the cooler lines haven't been crushed- it happens and the trans will overheat and slip. Fluid likely will look & smell bad.

We got it home today. Drained T. pan and refilled it before we left. 2 1/2
gts dextron plus a gt of Lukas Transmission stuff . That wasn't my idea.
Got in driveway of
my place and it wouldn't move. 30 mile trip 1 hill which we had to climb
from a dead stop. He didn't have much power when he was going over it.
Prev. owner said when it got warm it wouldn't move. They would shut it off for a while
and it would work again. That is all I can tell you , I was following him in
mine. Engine bay is cleaner than hell. no oil all over anything. Does
need new battery cables plus 1 directional bulb.
Brother is home now but any suggestions or
questions would be appreciated. Hoot----The Body looks darn good and inside also

I don't believe anything electrical will cause they symptoms you describe.
I had a transmission fail years ago with symptoms just like yours.
My tranny was toast. Turns out some big o-rings in the clutch packs were failing and when they'd heat up they would let all fluid just go past them causing a no move situation.

My buddy had the same issue with his 91 XJ this week. Would move when first started then nothing. Dropped transmission pan. Filter was completely plugged. Replaced filter and re-filled tranny. Took about 4 quarts of Dexron III. Fixed the issue. Gonna drain it again in a few days, just to complete the cleaning procedure. He has 169k on his Jeep. Probably the first time tranny was serviced.

I thought this one only had a screen not a filter. I was going to do another T.oil
change today drain pan and see if it would help, now I just don't know
what to do. When we got it here at my place and went to park it afte
r letting it run in yard for a while he backed it up then it just quit. No
forward no reverse. This is the only thing we have done so far. Hoot
Fluid was dark not a good red at all maybe there is hope with a few more changes. Didn't smell bad

His is a Larado has the comfort-power for transmission.. It wouldn't move
at all today so pushed it in garage. Told him to check fuse by glove box also about Kick down cable.
Is there a Thread some place on here on all what all to check on this transmission asian warner probably misspelled it Thanks Hoot
wife ordered the factory manual but hasn't arrived yet on computer. I imagine it should help a lot. There was a screw up on the order our fault. Should be here tomorrow I hope.

If you put the trans in 1-2 it should move, even with all the electronics dead. If it does not, that's likely a hydraulic issue. Fluid, seals, pump, etc. I think Firehawk (above) is probably correct. Age and heat have probably worked their magic on the seals.
You can do a line pressure test to find out for certain.
The AW4 transmission manual is floating around the internet:

It has been sitting in garage- no work done at all yet. Brother has been
busy- He did get 2 gal Trans. fluid for it. I told him about the 10 minutes
fill and drain on you-tube but we haven't got to it yet. When he gets
some free time we will be back at it. Did finally get the
factory manual. Hoot
