Default Check Gauges/19V/Check Engine/Bogged Engine

I have a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0l that has recently started throwing a check gauges light with a volt reading of 19V. I have a ODB reader so when the Check Engine light came on I read it. It threw a P 1492 which was the battery sensor. I swapped out the sensor and cleaned all of my grounds + battery terminals. It ran good for about 30 miles and now I am getting the same thing.

Check Gauges > 19v > Check Engine > Then she bogs down really hard and loses about 70% of her power. I would be flying normally if I pressed this hard on the pedal.

I have changed the alternator out two times in this jeep due to the opposite end of having a Check Gauges > 0-9V with dash and lights dying. Could there be something I am missing?

First I'd check with a voltmeter - are you really getting those voltages?

If true, I think that points to your PCM. The voltage regulator lives there, so changing the alternator won't help.

Check your grounds, before you spend any money. The PCM grounds to the plate near the coil (I think you still have a coil on a 99?), which is where the big battery ground goes. Check the cables and the connections. Take each connection apart and clean it to bare, shiny metal, coat with dielectric grease, and reassemble.

Inspect the cables visually, and physically. Pull, tug, wiggle, and yank on them. Don't be gentle.

Yes - still a regular coil on 99, 2000+ has coil pack.

Thanks, Pat. I thought that's what I remembered.

I did clean that ground with just a wire brush. I did a fair bit of research and troubleshooting before posting. I will clean it again with brake cleaner this time. I tried looking for PCMs at the local UPull&Pay, but they are kind of a hot commodity and you really need to be on them to get them. The alternator is a Auto Zone Duralast brand and I have already been through two of them with their "warranty," and wouldn't need to pay to swap it.

I think eventually I wanted to upgrade to a Mopar replacement so Betty doesn't die in the salt flats.

Just an FYI I think I fixed it. I forced it to check engine again and pulled it into the driveway and tested the terminals. The battery was indeed getting 17v. I decided to try cleaning up a couple more pieces.

I pulled the engine block ground again and hit the metal with a wire brush on a drill.

Also, there is a terminal that connects to the positive terminal on the battery, that goes into the front side of the fuse box to another wire to the engine. I started to trace all the wires and found this terminal that is hidden by a plastic cover. I decided to give that a good cleaning.

Started her back up and low and behold I wasn't getting 17v while running and returned back to 13.7ish. Decided to take her around the block and I am not getting any issues anymore. I am about to run some errands and will update.

Yeah, it's amazing what a corroded connection can do. Things get weird.
