Just a question on how the check engine light work on a 2001 xj . On my xj when I turn on my ignition switch with out starting the engine it take about 10 sec before my engine light comes on then it will go off about 10 sec after and stay off . If I just get in and start the engine the engine never comes on , but if I set a code it will light up and stay on until I clear the code . I was wounding if it works the same on other 2001xj's or may be there is a problem with my computer .

So I figured I would try to help and see how my '00 works.
Going to work I just turned the key to the on position.
Took about 2 maybe 3 seconds for the Check Engine light to come on.
About the same for it to go out.
On the way home I was going to just start the Jeep and see.
I forgot to look. LOL.

When you first turn on the key, all the warning lights go thru a bulb check sequence, then turn off. After you start it, whatever needs to be on will come on. If you turn the key directly over to start from off, they all will flash and then go off as needed. If you have a trouble code stored that cleared itself, the CEL may stay on for a short period of time until the computer recognizes it's not needed.

 

Well my check engine light does not turn on when I 1st turn on the key it takes about 5 sec or so then it will turn on for about 5 to 10 sec then go off . If I turn the key form off to start and start the engine the check engine light will not go though a bulb check , witch I thought was not right , but if others work the same way I guess its ok .

 

My son took off in the XJ for the long weekend did not get a chance to look to be sure. When he comes back I'lltry to remember to look.
