Default Cheap swing away carrier idea...

I was looking at the carriers that come on Rodeo's/Passports... I'm sure one could be modded to fit. Doesn't look like it would inhibit the gas door either.

the xj's came with them. You'll have to modify it for bigger tires.

I'm going to give it a try in a few weeks after I find one. I would do the Rodeo one just to be different.

I have an OEM XJ rear tire carrier, from an 89 XJ, on my 91 right now. I also have a 32" tire on a white wagon wheel steeley rim and it's been holding that wieght just fine. So, the modifcation would only come into play with a tire bigger than a 32. Haven't tried a 33 but, I will experiment with that this evening and update.

Another few reasons for me to try the Rodeo is the fact that they are plentiful around here... can't seem to find an XJ carrier anywhere. And 2, my quarter panel isn't exactly straight where the XJ carrier would mount.

Sounds like you have a good plan. If or when you get your Rodeo tire carrier mouted on your XJ, do a write up and post pics.

Anyways... off to getting this PITA passenger side shackle bolt out so I can put my TF shackles on.

You will have to modify it. I used to have a lifted Rodeo, and the biggest tire you can fit on the carrier is a 31.

Yeah I'm gonna have 30"-31" tires on there depending on what I can get a deal on. A friend has some fairly worn 31" STT's that he's gonna give me so I'll use one as a spare.

There's an XJ in town with full-width 60's and 44"s, leaf sprung front and he has a swing away with a fullsize spare.
