Change gears or go bigger diffs
Ok so my 88 has the stocks axles with 3.07s or .08s whatever. It hates the hills goin to my moms place, iowa is kinda hilly, and if i want to keep a constant speed of say 60, i have to down shift to 4th to stay at 60, other wise, pedel to the floor, it still slows down before the top of the hill. So anything better then those gears. PLUS i want to go to 31s, and i do alot of in town drivin, so i dont really want crap mgs.
So should i just swap gears out to something better then whats in it,
Or swap to bigger diffs sense i want a different gear ratio anyways. Its supposed to have a limited slip but i think its worn out, because it only seems like the right rear spins when playin in the snow. So maybe should swap diffs? I dont care if its a something thats a one wheel wonder, i can always get a locker.
I dont want to do major changes to it, i still have to drive to wyoming with it in the spring.
Any help is greatly appreciated. Jeff

The ratio should be fine with tires no larger than 31s and would be stronger than what you have.

keep the dana 30 with the disconnect it put a lot less wear and tear on the front axle and gas mileage will be a litte better than the other front without it

Ya the rear diff is a dana 35. Ive asked about it on here before and thats how i found out. And its a stick so thats why it has 3.07s. Could i just get the center chunks, front and back, out of an auto jeep and just swap it over that way?

No, not if you want to get rid of the Dana 35, plus you would have to set up the R&P if you weren't getting rid of the 35. I would still go with the non disco Dana 30 over the disco Dana 30 but I'm looking for a 4x4 and so I'm not that concerned about mileage.

And you have to keep in mind....the 4.0 is made for low end torque. You can blow away little souped up ricers off the line, but you ain't gonna be winning any races from 50+. What you are experiencing is normal. My auto downshifts on big hills at 60+ also.
