Default Can hotwire the solenoid, but car won't crank on its own

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping for some trouble-shooting help. Started up my 99 XJ drove to work, and after my shift went to start it and nothing. Battery seemed fine, but tried jumping it just for the heck of it. No luck. No click, crank, or anything. I have dash lights/headlights, radio, etc. I figured it was the starter, as I encountered a similar situation before, so I put a new one in. Still no crank. I hotwired the solenoid and it started right up. I followed the wire back to the relay/fuse box under the hood and tried switching around some of the relays, but it didn't help. Any thoughts about what to fix or replace? As soon as I turn the car off, it doesn't start on its own.

I really appreciate it!

you replaced the starter? Without verifying if it was bad?

i agree with the above post....try putting the jeep in neutral and try starting. Or wiggle the shifter in park while you try to start it.

I know, I know...I jumped to conclusions too quickly. I have had NSS issues with other jeeps, so I did try starting it in neutral and wiggling the shifter, but no-go. I did check that I had reverse lights before pulling the NSS and cleaning it.

Did you figure out what this was? I am having the same issue right now. I can jump it to start with a screwdriver, or by jumping the starter relay, but will not start in park or neutral and I have reverse lights.

"NSS" Neutral switch ?
I've been having the same problem but also having to turn the switch to on 2 or 3 times to prime it before it will start.
But after it started it was running fine until all at once it would turn over but not start.
Checked an not getting any fuel so had a buddy put a pump in an still no fuel.

Could the "NSS" be my problem? '96 XJ
just about on my last nerve..

Thanks for any an all help

From what I have been reading that sounds like the ignition switch. Not the pin but the black ignition switch that the ignition pin goes into.

I'll tell my mechanic, he hasn't seen it yet. His wife is in ICU.

I've been having a lil trouble with the NSS but just enough to be irritating but like to fix as much as I can..
Can I bypass the NSS or can it be adjusted?

My main problem now is no fuel after having a new pump in.
I had the same problem with my Ranger after changing the pump. I had short and I cut the wire at the pump an ran a hot wire an toggle switch been running ever since.
Thinking about trying it on the jeep. I think I'll try it on the old one first.

I didn't mean to hi jack your post but we do have the same problem.
I'm just trying figure out as much as I can while I'm waiting for the weather to break.

Thank you for all the help it's much appreciated
