Hi guys, I need help!!! I have a 2000 xj that won't idle. I can start it by giving it gas, and can keep it running by giving it gas, but the second I let off, it dies. Then, suddenly, it cures itself, and runs fine. The next time I start it, it won't idle again. I found a Thread about cleaning the battery terms, so I did. This solved the problem for two starts. the third time, won't idle again!!! I can actually drive it by slamming it in drive, and gunning it. Once moving, it seems to clear up. Please help!!

Marginal battery. Have it tested at a place like autozone. Should be your problem You can clean your IAC if you have time, that can never hurt as well.

Thank you guys!!! I know my battery is sh*#%y. What exactly is an IAC??

Idle air control valve/ sensor. You can take the time to clean it with carb cleaner and scrub it or just replace it. Also replace your Throttle Position Sensor as well. Good Luck!!

you shouldnt use carb cleaner to clean it... use a little water and papertowels.

battery sounds bad. i bought an optima. its a beast.

I have a 2000 xj and I had the same exact problem last month and it turned out to be the IAC valve. Its located on the throttle body and it controls the idle speed of the engine. The valve tends to either get dirty or completely seize, as mine did, and it then it won't let enough air past the throttle body for the engine to idle. Its very easy to replace and fixed my problem, hopefully yours is just as easy a fix.

Yeah if you have a junk battery, should of realized that was your problem lol. Swap that out and you should be good to go. Test with another battery before you buy a new one if you want to be safe.
