Default A/C Question

Mines the old A/C so I havent got the R134 retro yet.. My compressor never turns on when I turn on the A/C no click nothing, I can turn the clutch by hand and its a little hard to turn (little resistance but i can turn it easily) I dont have a way of testing the a/c pressure i have heard that it can stop turning on when its empty? the book tells me to bring it to a service center lol but im just wondering what do i do..

Buy the retro kit and hope the compressor/clutch is ok?
Test the one I have and have it charged?

any ideas on stuff i could do?

The compressor needs to be on to suck in the refill refrigerant. You must jump the compressor by running a small jumper wire from the + terminal of your battery to a single wire that connects to the clutch on the compressor.

Even if its empty this will start it? so that would tell me if the clutch engages its OK.. hm so does the car have to be on for this to work?

It won't click on if it's to low or empty. I used a retro kit on mine and it works nice. Part # 2538 FJC,Inc cost about $20. I did this myself 6OZ oil 36OZ 134A

not true mine was almost empty and when i got enough pressure it popped right back to life. his best bet is to take it and have the clutch tested at a ac shop though

Something you guys need to know is that when you charge, you turn the can upside down so the liquid enters the line. It then expands and will create enough pressure to trip the low pressure safety switch. Also when using a blend like R134A, If the can is pointed up you will boil off the parts of the mix that have the highest vapor pressure and if you use a partial can, the mix will be wrong. Mixes have to be charged with the can upside down anyway.
