My exact problem. I found out this morning that there's "sensor foolers" so google it. Interesting stuff. I bought my 96 xj with the converter gone. Runs like crap like it's dumping gas in. Starts off fine. It's spuratic.

The front o2 sensor is what controls your air fuel ratio, removing the converter doesn't affect it at all. The rear o2 sensor if you have one is what monitors the converter, all it will do is trip a code if it's bad or the converter is missing it has no affect on how the engine runs.
