I was wondering if anyone has any info on bypassing the o2 sensor in the cat of a 96 xj. Mine has took a dump on me and I was thinking instead of replacing it and spending alot of $ is there another way to deal with it and get rid of check engine light. Thanks in advance for any info.

Uh, no. The PCM is looking for fluctuating voltage from the O2. A functioning O2 sensor is needed to keep the CEL off.

Uh, yes. He just needs to supply 450mV (narrowband) or 2500mV (wideband), depending on the o2 sensor.

Is the O2 sensor out, or is the cat bad? From what I understand, the O2 at the cat monitors the cat, not air/fuel.

The cheapest fix is to put a piece of tape over the check engine light : )

Under $100 to fix right, and that's estimating on the high side

Well I'm actually also wanting to kill my kitty. I know it's bad which is probably why I'm getting a code from the o2. I'm not going to spend the $ to replace it for sure. No checks here. And I only paid $400 for this thing. Should I just weld a bung in the pipe I replace it with?

3 of the 4 Jeeps in my family have the wire to the cat cut, no check engine light. Mines OBD-I the others are OBD-II
If your getting a code for the O2 sensor itll be the one just on the exhaust side of the manifold

there are no second 02 sensors on OBD1 xj's, and a cut/missing 02 sensor will cause a check engine light. so I call B.S.
