Default burning smell at start up

Just noticed this today. I went to the store after work and when I started my jeep it had a slight burning smell through the vents. I did not notice the smell when I left work only when I was leaving the store. It only last for a second and then its gone. So I came home, let it sit for a few, and started it up again, same thing happened. Slight burning smell for a second then gone. I have had the air vent on today but I did not run the heat. Anyone experience this as well?

Yea I know... Its just another thing to worry about. Just thought it was odd to smell it only at start up and then go away... Alternator going bad maybe?

Um...dont really sound like a alt. maybe more of a oil issue...sometime when you start a car esspecially in a xj the oil take a sec to get picked up and put on all the moving parts...maybe its that. what it smell like?

just smells like a slight electrical burning. It only does it for a second right as start up then its gone. Got home and opened the hood but did not smell anything like it. It just comes through the vents and only right after start up.

I've been noticing this on mine for a while now. No idea what it is. If you figure it out, let me know.

Odd thing... this morning at start up, I didnt smell the burning smell. The only thing different from any other day is it rained. Maybe something got wet and was burning off. Its supposed to rain again today, so we will see.

I think I may have found the answer. I have a slow coolant leak someplace, haven't been able to pinpoint where. I tried burning a little coolant outside of the jeep, and the smell was the same. Wherever it's leaking must be somewheres near where the air for the heater is, and its the residue from the cooling burning off. Where does the air for the heater get picked up?
