Broken Distributor Gear

Has anyone ever experienced this? I have searched pretty hard and can find it on other models, but not any 4.0s. I had a no start issue last few weeks, couldn't get it running, so took it to Firestone and being told that the distributor drive gear broke and the camshaft spline is broken too. That their is metal in the motor and they suggested swapping in a used motor. Then today it was that they couldn't find a used motor so a reman would be $5900 installed out the door.

I big thing is I replaced the distributor gasket 18 months ago and the gear was in great shape with no sign of wear. Do this things just break? Is the motor trash now?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

I never had a distributor gear break. Strip, sure. But break? I read your other thread. How did they come to the conclusion the distributor, and cam, were both broken?

They cant find a used engine? Thats total horsecrap. They dont want to deal with it and are hoping youll take it elsewhere.

Firestone installing an engine? I think I would pass on that.

it suggest the camshaft seized in the bearings, and broken metal in an engine entails a very complete rebuild, if you are working and do not have time, I would suggest ringing local junkyards, ask them how much for a used engine, and if any of their employees would swap it for you cash!

I am thinking this should cost ~$1500
Cherokee XJ are often sold complete and running for not much more than that.

a reman engine is going to cost a lot more, and shop labor

Yep. Firestone doing anything to one of my vehicles except MAYBE tires?

Not happening.

Thanks for the responses everyone, makes me feel not as crazy with the diagnosis. I picked up the vehicle and while I see some issues with the distributor gear, I did not think the camshaft gear was that bad. What are yalls thoughts? Does the camshaft need to be replaced?

That dstributor gear is shot. I wouldnt trust the cam, either. Rebuild or replace, whichever is easier for you.

I would think your oil pump is locking up and is hard to turn , you can replace the cam , oil pump and clean the oil pan . I've done this on a ford motor and had no problems .

Bushing failed in the distributor, was the distributor held in place with the clamp or just a bolt & washer?
