Default 4.0 Distributor less engine swap over to distributor

Just bought me a 2000 jeep Cherokee. Been looking at engine builds and just wondering if i can switch my distributor less ignition system using the single coil packs per 2 cylinders and install a distributor and plug and wires.

Na and why would you want to go backwards....... Everything is different because your C.A.S/C.P.S (where you want to fit the distributor) not only controls spark but also the fuel injector timing via the ECU. I've nic-named the coil pak motors "OBD2-2” and play with it at your own peril. Year model's 00 & 01 are more unique because even the auto isn't plug'n'play/interchangeable with earlier XJ's plus the NP242 isn't the same as earlier models (machined flange differs)..... So have fun and good luck

Why would you want to do this?

Look at the Viper Coil Switch, which allows you to run a coil with 6 plug wires. I have done it, but not had a chance to drive it on the road yet though.

For a number of reasons;
  1. I had a few 4.0L coils go bad, and at $100 a piece I had enough
  2. I always hated how hard it was to get the coil off on the trail - especially that plug in the back.
  3. I have the Spectre Air Cleaner and that made it even worse to get the coil off.
  4. I have a 96 motors, so I don't even have the mounting bolt holes for the coils, I had to make brackets.
  5. I like something different and it costed me a total of $6 dollars to upgrade, I got a Caravan Coil for free, and bought a nice almost new set of wires at the junkyard for $6.
  6. Having plug wires makes it easier to check for spark if broken on the trail.
  7. Easier to carry one of those Caravan/Viper coils as a spare in the back without fear of breaking unlike the long stock coil it comes with.

If I did not need a new coil and read about the viper coil swap, I probably would have just stuck with the stock coil. But since I needed a new coil I figured why not try it.

The way I did mine I can always change right back, I made a custom extension cable for the plug in , so everything is still stock and there. I did not cut any wires.

I just wish I could as easily dump my Distributor on my 98 Cherokee as I did my 2000, I like hitting the deep water and not looking forward to wet Distributors Caps, hopefully I can seal and vent mine enough to keep it dry.

Fair enough. Seems like you thought it through. A lot of people seem to be doing that swap just to jump on the bandwagon or thinking they'll get some kind of performance boost.
