Default broken bolt

i over tightened a bolt for the valve cover its in the back side of the valve cover i put the bolt head back on because i had just change the gasket(back last summer this happened) now im noticing wetness around the spark splug holes and i think its the valve cover gasket

how would i go about getting the valve cover off again with that broken bolt in the back?

i heard of drill and extract method but i am unsure on how to do it

any help would be greatly appreciated

i almost forgot

i have a similar problem with the thermostat housing bottom bolt (the one closest to passenger side of engine)

i originally put a different type of bolt and it wasnt leaking but since this all happened last summer i had to put my thermostat back in during the winter and its been leaking ever since

to describe exactly what happened i over tightened the bolt and the back of the hole where the bolt goes broke off its a little piece but it seems to leak coolant down onto the water pump being that its above it

the spot is very hard to get to but i am tired of the nasty smell of burning coolant i also think its starting to cause failing in the system cause my top hose looks a little burnt where it attaches onto the thermostat housing

note: the nasty darkesh stuff ontop of the t-housing thats mainly where it leaks but when engine is on it can splash!

please help!!!

your t-stat housing may be warped. and tap out the hole if you can.

for sure i know that i broke the bolt hole where the bottom of the t-stat housing goes. its broken on the head side where the t-stat mounts (the mounting holes)but only the bottom hole the underside of the hole broke off so it no way for the bolt to catch and get tight..... does this make any sense?

i just dont know the routine to fix the hole how do u tap out the hole?

thanks!!!

you have to extract the broken bolt first. drill a hole in the center, and use an extractor.

you might wanna invest in a torque wrench

there's many different types and measurements. i have 3. you just need a simple click style, you don't want one with a gauge on it. i'd buy a 3/8 drive ft/lb that starts at 20, and i'd buy an in/lb for the smaller stuff.

as those valve cover bolts are rated at 55 in/lbs. and the t stat is around 20 ft/lbs, don't remember the exact torque on that one off hand. sounds like you're over tightening bolts and breaking them.

something like this should do the job if you have a drill motor
this one is to much but it will give you an idea of what to look for
