Default brakes

Hi guys, im pretty much new to jeeps, bought my first one a few months back. It is a 1991 jeep cherokee laredo with the 4.0 with 218 thousand miles on it, automatic transmission. So my question is how far should i have to push the brake pedal down to get the brakes to start working? I just put new brakes on all 4 and a new master cylinder, I have bleed the brakes and have rechecked every brake wo make sure it is working. Like making sure the caliper piston is moving when applying the brakes on both sides and the rear brakes are working. The jeep does stop well ive just never driven another vehicle that i had to depress the brake pedal so much to get the brakes to actually start braking.. Anyone with any ideas?

In '96 they put in a double brake booster, big difference. Search the forums here for the upgrade, lots of info on year and vehicles for the swap. Then you could go step further and do the rear disk brake mod too.

Here is one way to do it I had bookmarked, again more info in forums.

An XJ Laredo? Are you sure?
If it has drum brakes in the rear you must adjust up the shoes to raise the pedal. If it's spongy and just sinks, you either have a leak or an open bleeder somewhere, or just air in the lines. Pedals should always be firm and high.
