Do this first and don't get the cart in front of the horse. Has the source of the leak been verified?

I'd be looking up ABOVE first, and VERIFYING the source of the oil leak YOURSELF.

Everybody, who doesn't own or have to pay for or perform your vehicle repairs, loves to poke their noggin UNDER the Jeep and come out bearing the false bad news that your RMS is leaking.

Many mechanics, friends, people on Jeep forums who can’t see your Jeep from where they’re at, and good old Uncle Bob seem to enjoy telling you it’s the rear main seal. Has a catastrophic ring to it, doesn’t it?

A simple leak at the back of the valve cover or other source could produce the same symptoms. You don’t need to be a mechanic to figure this out. If you have good eyesight and a dim flashlight, you’re good to go on your own. Don't jump on the RMS/oil pan gasket bandwagon right off the bat.

Almost any oil leak on your 4.0 is gonna drip from the RMS area for two simple reasons.

First off, the engine sits nose-up and any oil will run back to the RMS area. Secondly, the RMS area is also the lowest point on the engine. Simple physics and the old plumber's adage apply here. "$hit flows downhill".

Valve cover gasket, oil pressure sending unit, oil filter adapter seals and distributor gasket, in that order, have to be eliminated as possibilities first.

Imo, stop leak additives are snake oil.
I recently replaced every gasket on my engine, and couldn't be happier when I look underneath, and see no oil on the ground.
It's not an easy job, but its worth it! (and it doesn't cost $500)
I also recommend the "One-Piece" Oil Pan gasket from Fel-Pro.
It is far superior to that cork garbage, and worth every penny!

If they are only charging you $160 to replace the pan, just let them do it.

Umm no that's not what I said the oil pan itself is 160$ its 300$ for the work. I never said that I was going to do the work myself. I was just wondering if anyone here knows where to get an oil pan cheaper then
160$ right now im looking at 160$ for just the pan and 60$ for the gasket plus 300$ for labor.

300 to swap an oil pan!?! Seriously? You can do that yourself in about 2 hours... Drain oil, remove bolts, remove gasket, replace gasket, replace pan, replace bolts, add oil. DONE.

I'd de-grease, pressure wash it well at the car wash, then watch closely right away. Just driving a mile and it will have blown all over and you won't know where it came from.

The oil filter adapter leaking will drip right off the bell housing and look like the RM is leaking. The O rings harden. See> http://www.myjeepxj.com/cherokee-rep...filter-adapter

Also it's important that the front tube on your valve cover is free to vent. Any restriction there, (like one of those after-market filters plugged), will cause crankcase pressure to rise and make it **** oil all over.

Well ya its 50-60 and hour normal labor rate and you gotta figure the dealer would want 1000$.

My dad believes the rear main has been leaking however the garage noticed the rust hole in the oil pan and pointed it out dident really confirm the rear main.

so I should clean the engine right off then watch it right away and see where it comes from.

I mean the garage already found a hole in the oil pan but it was leaking before that and burning oil.

When I park at a store and come back out theres atleast 2 puddles.

Also why would I have an oil filter adapter??? this is not the aftermarket forum is it my Cherokee is pretty much bone stock. Never herd of that

Yea, clean it and watch to see where it's leaking, is what I would do. Then now you know where the leaks are, take it from there. Yea, it will drip from all over when it's all over. Short of changing the pan, there are "boiler plugs" or something like that. An aggressive screw like a wood screw, with a rubber washer and 'flange". You can screw it into a hole, then the rubber comes "home" and makes a seal.

Don't under-estimate that vent. It really does need to be free to vent.

No like he said, just the pan. It's really no fun....Just about $30 for the seal and gasket. Then more for oil, ect.....make sure it's not the adapter O rings, the vent or something else. Like cruiser says, it all looks like a RM seal just because that's the lowest point.

my jeep used to leak oil. not quite as bad as you're describing, but enough to bug me. i did my valve cover gasket and filter adapter o rings and it doesn't leak a drop now.

also, you can man up here in one of two ways. either

a. man up and pay a mechanic to do it for you without complaining about the cost

or

b. man up and do stuff yourself.

i recommend B
