What kind of budget? Aussie Locker is about $300 for the 8.25. You dont have limited slip do you? If you do you'll have to buy a new carriew to use a lunchbox locker.

just an idea, but almost all the weight in the cherokee is in the front, a lot of people lock the front end first, but to each his own.

to test limited slip... jack up the rear end and put it in 2wd and see how many wheels spin. or have a friend watch you do a burn out.

The only problem with this is if the clutch plates are no good this test won't work. I did that "test" several times and was 100% sure I had a open diff but when I opened my cover I learned other wise.

You can email your VIN to jeep for a build sheet. Usually if it does there is a sticker in the glove box saying it needs friction modifier, or a tag bolted to the diff cover, but good possibility both could be gone.

Would have said powertrax no slip but those apparently are off the market now (just learned this today actually) so lockrite is an option, aussie's have resumed production but haven't released any that I know of, spartan doesn't make one for the 8.25 anymore. Detroit makes a full case locker IIRC but that's above your budget. Best be would probably be a lockrite.
