If you are talking about swapping in a 8.25 in back and taking out the D35 it should swap in as long as the axle is out of a xj. but, you also need to keep in mind if the gears are the same front and rear.
If you have a cherokee, you have a D30 up front already. Unless you bought some hybrid that someone was creating.

iif both vechicles have the same trans you might get lucky with the gears and the motor size being the same is a plus

this is what i know about it Chrysler 8.25 rear axle from a 97 Jeep Cherokee. This has 3.55 gears, open diff, and 29 spline axle shafts. i have a 98 with 4.0, the guy has the same 4.0

there should be a little tab on the dana 30 dif cover that is held on by 2 bolts. on there it should say the size of your gears on it. it should look like this:
