i looked rear is an 8.25. but front has a box head screw for the plug, and a dana logo, and the # in the top right corner says 40563. any ideas???

when i got my first jeep i had the same question on the rear axle, but the easiest way to tell between the Dana 35 and Chrysler 8.25, is the shape of the housing. the dana is round on the bottom and the Chrysler has a flat bottom. the pictures listed earlier you can easily see the difference.

did some research on wikipedia and after comparsion its a dana 30. is this an ok axle for offroading?

your rear axle is not a dana 30 its either a 35 or an 8.25 or maybe a slight chance someone threw in a dana 44 the dana 30 was only used for the front end

So yes you have a Dana 30 but it is the front differential not the rear one. It( the rear differential) is one of the three choices previously given. Crawl under your jeep and keep the three photos in mind or snap a pic and post it and we will tell you which one you have. HTH

Yup, dana 30 front axle on all jeep cherokees, unless p.o. swapped it out.yeah it's ok for off roading.

He has a 1996 cherokee, is the year of the central axle disconnect front axle or not?

Now you need to look in your glove box. If it has a limited slip/ trac lock rear end then there will be a sticker saying that you have one and it requires a friction modifier. If you can't find it I can post a picture of mine!
