Default AW4 Transmission slips (freewheeling?) external problem?

I replaced my transmission with a salvage yard one w/ 88,000 miles. Same problem as the one I replaced. Checked the pan on the replacement, no shavings, clean fluid. Wondering if the there is an external problem that can cause the problems I'm having. Looked at the VSS last night, checked connections, don't know how to test it. Adjusted the kick-down cable at the throttle body. When it starts 'freewheeling' I can stop, shut it off, start it back up and can go a few miles, or maybe (MPH) and it starts freewheeling again, just like the tranny I replaced. Anyone have any ideas? HELP Mr. Wizard...

Thanks Daddycat, will try some of these tests tomorrow. Glad to get a response. Been banging my head like this guy trying to figure it out. With both trannies acting the same way, I was hoping the problem was external, i.e. sensors, switches, solenoids, adjustments...
What do you make of the thing moving again after shutting it off for a few seconds? Heated electrical circuit, sensor or pressure change after shutting it off? Thanks again, curt

Sure sounds like the tranny was not the problem. Does it feel like you're in neutral when it's "freewheeling"? If yes it makes me think the shift linkage needs adjusting. You will know more after running the tests on the link I gave. Good luck!
I found these threads on adjusting the shift cable:

Steverobb the earlier (1st of 3) links seems dead, the second 2 still are working but I'll repost the 2nd two though I'm not sure why you want them again given they're still working (for me anyhow).

Ya sorry Joe. I having the same issue as zincman. Just trying to see what resources you shared to help diagnose the problem. I have tried contacting zincman to see if he was able to resolve his issue. What kind of tests did you suggest to perform?

Honestly I don't remember but on page 7 of this PDF are the service manual tests:

and this may help:
