Default Aw4 not shifting out of first - stranded in Wyoming

Hello guys I come here for desperate need of help!

I’ve been on a road trip and I lost overdrive yesterday. I’ve adjusted the TV cable, that worked for 5 minutes down the road then would lose overdrive again.
This morning we left the campsite and the Jeep wouldn’t shift out of first gear. Shifting manually doesn’t help i.e. 1/2 and 3 doesn’t make a difference.

I’m currently stranded in south Wyoming and not sure what parts I need. I’m guessing control solenoids, tv cable bad or maybe a bad torque converter or transmission shot ??

willing to pay for someone to drive a transmission and or parts to me, the small town of Urie has nothing.

The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is on the backside of the Dash Lower Trim Panel, right in front of the passenger's left knee. The fuse for it is built into the harness. You might be able to pull it down and expose the fuse. Removing the fuse should allow you to shift it "manually" with 1/2 and 3...

There was no fuse in the harness checked all the way up to the fire wall. However I unplugged the tcm completely and I’m able to shift manually now 1-3! Thanks for the lead we’re back on the road

That is extremely valuable information, Thanks! ☺☺☺☺☺☺☺🎶☺☺

I drive the jeep far in the boonies, and sure will appreciate this info a lot if my tranny electrics go wacky in the remoteness.

Does this apply to all years of XJ with the AW4? I got a 1990, buddy has a 2001, both AW4's.

Im betting this works for all aw4’s however mine is weird cause I found no fuse in that line but that doesn’t mean my previous owner didn’t move it.

hyped this got me back on the road however I’ll need to solve this when I’m back in Oregon. Anyone have ideas on how to trouble shoot this? First spots I’m guessing are the control solenoid and then tcm ? From there my suspicions is the TC

Only the older Renix had the fuse in the harness, and no power to the TCM would be the same as unplugging it. Rough guess would be a bad #2 solenoid, rear speed sensor, wiring, or least likely is the computer. You got varmints chewing your wiring at the campsite?

One of the places to look at.

TRANSMISSION CONNECTOR REFRESHING

OCTOBER 30, 2015 SALAD 22 COMMENTS

Over near the transmission dipstick tube are 2 rather large connectors. One is black and goes to the NSS and the gray connector goes to the transmission itself
. These 2 connectors carry all the info between TPS, TCU, NSS, speed sensor, and transmission solenoids.

Unplug each one, visually inspect for corrosion or bent pins, spray them out with electrical contact cleaner and plug them back in.

Additionally, if your Jeep is an ’87 to ’90 Renix, it’s always a good idea to reach up under the glovebox area and unplug the connector to the TCU and spray it out along with the receptacle of the TCU. While you’re there, find the fuse right in that area for the TCU. Remove it and spray out it’s receptacle and clean any corrosion from the fuse.
